Jammu, 13th August 2022: Leading healthcare provider in Delhi, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, today launched its Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant OPD Services in Jammu, in partnership with the city-based Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CLDD), Jammu. The OPD launch is yet another patient-centric step towards making quality healthcare services accessible. Starting from today the OPD will be functional on monthly basis. The facility will provide expert advice and treatment related to liver, pancreas and biliary ailments.
The OPD services were launched by Dr Ajay Kumar, Chairman - Gastroenterology & Hepatology- Pan Max & HOD – BLK-Max Institute for Digestive & Liver Diseases, Dr. Manav Wadhawan - Senior Director - Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Dr. Neha Berry - Consultant - Gastroenterology & Hepatology, from BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi and Dr. Adnan Rafiq – Managing Director, Centre for Liver & Digestive Diseases (CLDD), Jammu.
During the launch of the OPD, Dr Ajay Kumar said, “Prevalence of liver disease, pancreas, gastrointestinal, fatty liver and hepatitis is increasing at an alarming rate. Most of these diseases are preventable and treatable if diagnosed in the early stages. Liver diseases develop silently, without any signs or symptoms. Damage to the liver progresses gradually and the patient begins to show symptoms only when over 70% of the liver has become dysfunctional. Liver failure causes many problems, including malnutrition, problems with Ascites, Blood Clotting, Bleeding from the Gastrointestinal Tract and Jaundice. Therefore, the diagnosis of early-stage liver disease and treatment with correct strategies is pivotal to treat it successfully if irreversible liver damage has not yet occurred.
With the launch of the OPD services, patients across age groups and all walks of life can avail the best consultation and treatment in Jammu and nearby regions, without the inconvenience of travelling to another city.
Dr. Adnan Rafiq – Managing Director, Centre for Liver & Digestive Diseases (CLDD), Jammu said, “We are really happy to have collaborated with one of the best Liver and Digestive centres in the country and strive to raise awareness about liver related issues. Our OPDs will offer consultation and encourage people to lead a healthy lifestyle as well as provide access to the best of technology. This OPD is going to be a valuable addition to the healthcare infrastructure of Jammu by providing world-class treatment solutions to patients in the city right at their doorsteps. Our services will include all consultations and investigations and provide a comprehensive line of treatment.”
Talking about the prevalence of liver diseases, Dr. Manav Wadhawan - Senior Director - Gastroenterology & Hepatology said “Liver damage can occur in individuals due to alcoholism, long-term (chronic) active infection (Hepatitis B or C), primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Chronic Liver disease due to HCC, birth defects of the Liver or Bile Ducts (Biliary Atresia), and metabolic disorders associated with Liver failure (e.g. Wilson's disease, Haemochromatosis). Anyone who is exposed to risk factors such as poor sanitation, lack of safe water and travelling to areas of high endemicity of liver diseases such as Hepatitis B & C can develop liver diseases. The early symptoms of liver failure include nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and diarrhea. Liver cirrhosis is a condition in which chronic damage to the liver causes scar tissues to replace healthy liver tissues. Meanwhile, Liver cancer accounted for nearly 7% of all cancer related deaths in India and was the fourth most common cause of cancer related death. An ultrasound diagnosis of the liver is usually enough to ascertain the condition of the liver, effectively judge the degree of the disease and improve the condition in time”.
There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. An estimated 2 lakh patients die of liver failure or liver cancer annually in India, about 10-15% of which can be saved with a timely liver transplant. Hence about 25-30 thousand liver transplants are needed annually in India but only 1,500 are being performed.

Dr. Neha Berry - Consultant - Gastroenterology & Hepatology said, “Patients with advanced stages of liver disease who are critical come to us after they have exhausted other forms of treatment or have developed liver cancer. In most cases, patients who undergo liver transplant are very sick. Liver disease is the tenth most common cause of death in India as per the World Health Organisation (WHO). Liver disease may affect one in every 5 Indians. People are advised to adopt a healthy lifestyle, indulge in regular exercise and eat healthy food to avoid further complications.”
